Origin note
is mainly a state-name and ancient clan-title surname with two strong source-backed lines. The older Gui-surname line begins with Shun, whose community was called Youyu and lived at Puban, placed southeast of today's Yongji in Shanxi. After Yu founded Xia, he enfeoffed Shun's son Shangjun at Yu city, north of today's Yucheng in Henan; this eastern Yu state later disappeared, and descendants used Yu as a surname. The Ji-surname line belongs to the Zhou royal kinship network: after King Wu conquered Shang, Zhou Zhang was already ruler of Wu, so Zhou Zhang's younger brother was enfeoffed at the old Xia ruins in today's northeastern Pinglu, Shanxi, as Yu Zhong of Western Yu. In the Spring and Autumn period, Jin Xian Gong borrowed the road through Yu to attack Guo and then destroyed Yu on the return, after which descendants used the former state name as a surname.
