Origin note
Yuan is a layered surname rather than a single-founder story. The main source-backed line begins with the Ji surname: in Western Zhou tradition, a son of King Wen of Zhou was enfeoffed at Yuan, in the area northwest of today's Jiyuan, Henan, and was remembered as Yuan Bo; after Jin destroyed the Yuan state in the Spring-and-Autumn period, descendants used the former state name as a surname. A second closely related layer comes from Jin's use of Yuan as a fief: Xian Zhen was enfeoffed there and was called Yuan Zhen, so later descendants could use the fief name; Zhao Shuai was also associated with the Jin Yuan fief and called Yuan Ji, giving another Yuan-identified line. Later sources add small changed-surname or granted-surname layers, including the Five Dynasties figure Xilizhila, granted the surname Yuan as Yuan Zhigan under Later Tang Mingzong, and a Qing-era Hulan Guarjia context in Heilongjiang.
