Origin note

Yuan is presented as a surname with several historically transmitted layers. One early traditional layer connects Yuan with an ancient Yuandu polity, where descendants used the state name as a surname. A second group of accounts makes Yuan a fief or ancestor-name surname: sources mention Wei Wuhou's son Gongzi Yuan, the Wei/Wei-state minister Yuan Xuan tradition, and a Chu Yuan Jun line. The best dated political layer is the Northern Wei surname reform: Emperor Xiaowen's court changed Tuoba, Hegu, Shiyun, and related Xianbei names to Yuan as part of the move toward Chinese-style surnames. Later taboo-avoidance traditions also record Xuan families becoming Yuan. This page therefore avoids one-founder certainty and treats modern Yuan families as potentially descending from ancient state, fief, ancestor-name, Xianbei changed-surname, or taboo-change lines.
