Yun is read yun as a surname. The page must separate two written-form layers. One layer is the old Yun written as : 23mofang traces it to Zhu Rong descendants and the Yun state around today's Anlu, Hubei, which was destroyed by Chu in the Spring and Autumn period; descendants used the state name and later dropped the city radical to become Yun. Another layer comes from Jinyun, a Huangdi-period official-title tradition in which descendants of a Jinyun office or clan name shortened Jinyun to Yun. A third layer is written-form convergence: the traditional surname Yun written with the rain radical is simplified as in modern simplified Chinese, so older and simplified can look identical.
