Time: Spring and Autumn tradition, 770-476 BCE
Place: Lu state ancestor-name layer; later Daibei / Northern Wei changed-surname context recorded separately.
Origin note
Zhan is verified through an ancestor-name layer and a changed-surname layer. The core Lu-state account traces the surname to Gongzi Zhan and Wuhai, whose group was named Zhan in the Lu tradition. A later ethnic-administrative layer records the Northern Wei Zhanchi compound surname being shortened to Zhan. A mythic Zhanshanggong account is preserved as a tradition, not treated as the sole historical origin.
