Origin note
Zhu is read zhu as a surname. The sources support several layers. One old state or place-name layer links Zhu to Pengzu descendants enfeoffed at Zhu, near southwest of modern Zhucheng, Shandong; related summaries also connect the name with the old Zhuji state and later Lu place-name Zhuyi. A second layer is Yue and Minyue: the Yue official Zhujiying is given as one ancestor-name source, and Wuzhu, a descendant of Goujian who became ruler of Minyue after aiding Liu Bang, is another route by which descendants used Zhu from an ancestor's name. A third layer is a compound-surname simplification: in the Five Dynasties, Zhugeshi Shipeng is said to have changed Zhuge to the single surname Zhu and hidden around Kuaiji.
