卓 is mainly explained through two Warring States layers. One is Mi-surname and linked to Chu: sources describe the surname either as descendants of Chu official Zhuo Hua or as descendants of Gongzi Zhuo, a son of King Wei of Chu, using the ancestor's name as a surname. The second layer is tied to the famous Shu-commandery Zhuo family: originally Zhao people, they were moved to Shu after Qin defeated Zhao, settled at Linqiong in today's Qionglai, Sichuan, and became wealthy through ironworking in the Qin-Han period. Later surname summaries also record Mongol clan names that were shortened or sinicized as Zhuo. These traditions are presented as parallel layers rather than one single genealogy.
